With the authorization from the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, Qingdao Binhai Vocational College was established in 1992. In 2005 it was upgraded to Binhai University. There are four branches, which are Undergraduate, Junior, Adult Education and International Exchange College. They cover more than 60 different specialty areas in Economy Management, International Business, Electro-Engineering, Informative Management, Computing Science and Technology, Foreign Languages, and Art with more than 17 thousand Chinese and foreign students.

At the very beginning, Binhai College’s motto was “Everyone has his gift and everyone can be useful.” The university encourages students to shrive to reach their full potential at Binhai to improve their moral characters, language skills, computer skills and so on.

Binhai was the first private College in Shandong to receive overseas students, to establish the party committee, to carry out the post responsibility system, to implement credit system. Out of many private colleges that have applied to be upgraded to University status, Binhai was one of the only two approved. It has awarded as “culturalized campus”, “excellent virtue-education college”, “ the leading vocational college”.

The University covers an area of 67.66 hectares and its total assets amount to about 560 million RMB. its campus is made up a complex of 40 buildings with a total construction area of 420 thousand square meters. There are 3547 computers, 1,100,000 volumes of books, 43 multimedia classrooms, 22 phonetic rooms, 54 specialized laboratories, 4academic halls, a sports ground with a standard artificial-grassed football field and plastic athletic tracks, a student center for extracurricular activities, and a gym. The auditorium, gymnasium, art museum and two libraries, etc. are not only a symbol of advanced modern civilization, but also refracts the Chinese culture.

The number of the university’s teaching and administrative staff is 1159, including 788 more full-time teachers, 139 teachers with master or doctoral degrees, 73 teachers with dual professional titles, and 57 part-time professors and associate professors. In addition, there are 31 full-time foreign teachers from Japan, Korea, USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Russia and Canada etc. The university has laid emphasis on teachers’ morality and advocated love and respect for the students as the basis of education.

The university always encourages teachers to continue studying and improving their teaching methods. The university is very flexible in the elective subject system. Based on this elective subject, the students can graduate in advance if they have accumulated enough credits in a subject. In addition, the students in financial trouble can support themselves by doing some part-time jobs or suspend their schooling without losing their position as a student.

54 laboratories of various kinds have been built at Binhai and more than 45 practicing bases in many enterprises have been set up outside the university. The practical classes account for 40 percent of that total. The university has created special modes that help the students become excellent and skillful people by combining professional skills with ordinary skills, and enable them to operate computer and type skillfully, and speak both Putonghua and foreign language correctly and fluently. The Educational Department of China has given approval to the university to hold examinations for CET-4, CET-6, and the national computers graded-examination and the state-popularized Putonghua. Students are able to possess one or several of 54 professional credentials including things like being able to get their driver’s license or even be a customs officer.

Qingdao is one of China’s important port cities. Besides it is also the center of regional trade, finance, information, new and high-tech zone, and north international shipping center. More and more domestic and foreign enterprises are investing in Qingdao Development Zone. Out of the 500 Top World listed companies, 50 can be found in the Qingdai Development Zone, famous companies such as Haier, Hisense, Aucma and Double-star. These companies provide wonderful opportunities employment for tens of thousands of graduates many who come from Binhai University. Statistics from the Personnel Department of Shandong Province shows that Binhai University ranks first with an average employment rate of 98%.

The university has established friendly cooperative ties with more than 20 universities in many countries, such as Japan, Korea, the U. S., Germany, Russia and Canada, etc. and this enable the students get green access to get further study abroad. Many excellent students have been chosen to study abroad yearly. 76 students were sent to SHINSUNG COLLEGE, BUSAN COLLEGE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, SHINSUNG COLLEGE, SAHMYOOK COLLEGE and CHEJU TOURISM COLLEGE in South Korea for further study in March, 2005.

The university is strict in student’s daily behaviors and norms by adhering to the traditional Chinese maxims, such as “lenience means harm but strictness love”, “a strict teacher fosters a brilliant student”. But the university provides much freedom in terms of choices of major and social activities, and creates an extensive scholastic and cultural environment.
